Okay guys, here's my list of 20 movies to watch for, arranged by release date (actually, I think it's 21, but that's close enough). Feel free to link this to other places, I've made sure it's not f-locked. Just please link, don't copy, because I spent lots of homework-procrastination time making this :D

Aeon Flux

Date Released: 2 December 2005 Wide
Starring: Charlize Theron, Pete Postlethwaite, Sophie Okonedo, Frances McDormand
Synopsis: The sci-fi actioner is set 400 years in the future, when disease has wiped out the majority of the earth's population except for one walled, protected city-state, Bregna, ruled by a congress of scientists. The story centers on Aeon Flux(Theron), the top operative in the underground 'Monican' rebellion, led by The Handler(Frances McDormand). When Aeon is sent on a mission to kill a government leader, she uncovers a world of secrets.
Official Site: http://www.aeonflux.com/
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0402022/
Trailer Link: http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/aeon_flux/
Costume Comments: Looks like another rubber/leather/pleather female action hero. Depends on the movie's success, but you can probably depend on at least one copy at a con this next season.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Date Released: 9 December 2005 Wide
Starring: Georgie Henley, William Moseley, Skandar Keynes, Anna Popplewell, Tilda Swinton, Rupert Everett, Liam Neeson
Synopsis: Four kids travel through a wardrobe to the land of Narnia and learn of their destiny to free it with the guidance of a lion messiah.
Official Site: http://adisney.go.com/disneypictures/narnia/index.html
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363771/
Trailer Link: http://www.apple.com/trailers/disney/the_chronicles_of_narnia.html
Costume Comments: Looks amazing. The snow-crust dresses of the white queen look amazing. Now if only I was tall . . .

Memoirs of a Geisha

Date Released: 9 December 2005 Wide/Limited
Starring: Ziyi Zhang, Ken Watanabe,Michelle Yeoh
Synopsis: Nitta Sayuri reveals how she transcended her fishing-village roots and became one of Japan's most celebrated geisha. I know this one is after a book.
Official Site: http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/memoirsofageisha/
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0397535/
Trailer Link: http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_pictures/memoirsofageisha/
Costume Comments: Again, amazing. I don't know how accurate they are, but they look lovely. Which reminds me, I'm trying to find places that have instructions on how to tie obis . . . if you know of some, pass them on. I'm trying to find different ways that are not the usual box.

The White Countess

Date Released: 21 December 2005 Limited
Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Natasha Richardson, Vanessa Redgrave
Synopsis: Set in 1930s Shanghai, where a blind American diplomat develops a curious relationship with a young Russian refugee who works odd -- and sometimes illicit -- jobs to support members of her dead husband's aristocratic family.
Official Site: http://www.sonyclassics.com/comingsoon.php?page=3
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0384686/
Trailer Link: None
Costume Comments: I'm thinking this will be another quiet-but-nice set like Finding Neverland.

Casanova

Date Released: 25 December 2005 Wide/Limited
Starring: Heath Ledger, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller
Synopsis: Heath Ledger plays the fabled romantic as a man who, after failing to win the affection of a particular Venetian woman, strives to discover the real meaning of love.
Official Site: http://touchstone.movies.go.com/index.html?dlink=casanova
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0402894/
Trailer Link: http://www.apple.com/trailers/touchstone/casanova/
Costume Comments: Opulent costumes from an opulent age. The corset in one picture looks to have princess seams, though, so I'm not entirely convinced.

The New World

Date Released: 25 December 2005 Limited
Date Released: 13 January 2006 Wide
Starring: Colin Farrell, Q'Orianka Kilcher, Christian Bale, David Thewlis
Synopsis: A Terrence Malick-scripted drama about explorer John Smith and the clash between Native Americans and English settlers in the 17th century.
Official Site: http://www.thenewworldmovie.com/
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0402399/
Trailer Link: http://justmovietrailers.com/video/4829/the_new_world_trailer.html
Costume Comments: Well, I really want to make total fun of this movie, but that was before I knew David Thewlis and Christian Bale were involved. But still, I will say that although the European costumes look accurate but bland, the Native American costumes make me raise an eyebrow. I'm not an expert, so I dunno . . . but my boyfriend and I did take some time assessing the nationality of the actors in a group shot, and let's just say that the general extra casting must have said 'Indian' and not 'Native American'.

The Libertine

Date Released: 25 November 2005 Very Limited
Date Released: 13 January 2006 Wide
Starring: Johnny Depp, Samantha Morton, John Malkovich
Synopsis: The story of John Wilmot (Depp), a.k.a. the Earl of Rochester, a 17th century poet who famously drank and debauched his way to an early grave, only to earn posthumous critical acclaim for his life's work.
Official Site: http://www.miramax.com/thelibertine/
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0375920/
Trailer Link: http://www.apple.com/trailers/weinstein/thelibertine/
Costume Comments: With Johnny Depp, who cares how good the costumes are?

Underworld: Evolution

Date Released: 20 January 2006 Wide
Starring: Kate Beckinsale, Scott Speedman, Bill Nighy
Synopsis: As the war between vampires and werewolves rages on, the legacy of both races is revealed. The personal histories of Selene (Beckinsale), the vampire warrior, and Viktor (Nighy), the father of modern-day vampires, are also revealed.
Official Site: http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/underworldevolution/
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0401855/
Trailer Link: http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/underworldevolution.html;_ylt=Ah6UCmBdhWKeubpkva45zHxfVXcA
Costume Comments: I can't even tell if they gave Selene a new costume. It's awfully similar. This one is a big wait and see.

Tristan & Isolde

Date Released: 3 February 2006 Wide
Starring: James Franco, Sophia Myles, Rufus Sewell
Synopsis: An affair between a very noble knight (Franco) and the very married future Queen of England (Myles) spells doom for the young lovers.
Official Site: None
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0375154/
Trailer Link: http://www.seismicproductions.com/tristan_&_isolde.html There's also a neat 'making of' attached to Kingdom of Heaven if you can rent it.
Costume Comments: I'm loving the simplistic elegance of the preview. Looks like it may be 'inspired by', but still pretty.

Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction

Date Released: 10 March 2006 Wide
Starring: Sharon Stone, David Morrissey, Charlotte Rampling, David Thewlis, Hugh Dancy
Synopsis: Novelist Catherine Tramell (Stone) is once again in trouble with the law, and Scotland Yard appoints psychiatrist Dr. Andrew Glass (Morrissey) to evaluate her. Though, like Detective Nick Curran before him, Glass is entranced by Tramell and lured into a seductive game.
Official Site: None
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0430912/
Trailer Link: None
Costume Comments: I put this under the 'you never know' category. The last one had a good dress, maybe this one will too. Anyway, David Thewlis and Hugh Dancy are eye candy enough for me.

V for Vendetta

Date Released: 17 March 2006 Wide
Starring: Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving
Synopsis: A shadowy freedom fighter known only as "V" uses terrorist tactics to fight against his totalitarian society. Upon rescuing a girl from the secret police, he also finds his best chance at having an ally.
Official Site: http://vforvendetta.warnerbros.com/
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0434409/
Trailer Link: http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/v_for_vendetta/
Costume Comments: This is the movie that Natalie Portman shaved her head for. Lots of pseudo-Nazi outfits that may start popping up at cons, so you may want to watch just to avoid the drama.

The Notorious Bettie Page

Date Released: 14 April 2006 Limited
Starring: Gretchen Mol, Lili Taylor, Jonathan M. Woodward
Synopsis: The story of Bettie Page, uber-successful 1950's pin-up model, one of the first sex icons in America, and the target of a Senate investigation (based on her bondage photos).
Official Site: http://www.thenotoriousbettiepage.com/
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0404802/
Trailer Link: None
Costume Comments: Looks amazing! I love the pinup era, and the bras look like bullet bras, so I'm convinced!

Aquamarine

Date Released: 14 April 2006 Wide/Limited
Starring: Sara Paxton, Emma Roberts, JoJo
Synopsis: Two teenage girls discover a mermaid in their beach club's swimming pool.
Official Site: None
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0429591/
Trailer Link: None
Costume Comments: I know, it looks like a cheesy pre-teen movie, but it's got a mermaid, so I added it. You never know . . . but I'll probably look around for pics of the mermaid without seeing the movie.

X-Men 3

Date Released: 26 May 2006 Wide
Starring: Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, Kelsey Grammer, Anna Paquin, Shawn Ashmore
Synopsis: None Yet
Official Site: http://www.x3movie.com/
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0376994/
Trailer Link: None, although there's a little blurb on the website.
Costume Comments: This is going to be big, no matter what. No pictures yet, though, so no way of telling if there are lots of new juicy costumes.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Date Released: 7 July 2006 Wide
Starring: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley
Synopsis: Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, and Elizabeth Swann engage in another rip roaring sea adventure because Jack's life is in danger with supernatural warriors, lead by the legendary Davey Jones.
Official Site: None
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0383574/
Trailer Link: http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1808405417/trailer
Costume Comments: Well, there's a wedding dress that's new, and apparently there will be lots more of Elizabeth in pants (since she's gotta wear them when fighting if POTC 1 is any example).

Marie-Antoinette

Date Released: 13 October 2006 Wide/Limited
Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, Molly Shannon, Shirley Henderson
Synopsis: Based on Antonia Fraser's biography of Marie Antoinette, a naïve 14-year-old Austrian and queen of France. At a young age, she was arranged to marry Louis XVI and was very unprepared for the woes of politics. She continued to be ridiculed by France and was decapitated during the French Revolution.
Official Site: None
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0422720/
Trailer Link: None
Costume Comments: Looks semi-accurate, although it's hard to tell with it all bunched up like that. Anyway, Kirsten's boobs are finally located somewhere near the place they should be, so she must be wearing a corset.

The Fountain

Date Released: Unknown 2006 Wide
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz
Synopsis: Spanning over one thousand years, and three parallel stories, The Fountain is a story of love, death, spirituality, and the fragility of our existence in this world.
Official Site: http://pdl.warnerbros.com/wbmovies/thefountain/flashsite/index.html
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414993/
Trailer Link: http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/thefountain/
Costume Comments: Looks like a time-traveller. The costume above doesn't look 100% accurate, but it's lovely.

Decameron: Angels & Virgins

Date Released: Unknown 2006 Wide
Starring: Hayden Christensen, Mischa Barton, Tim Roth
Synopsis: Young Florentines regale one another in the Italian countryside while the black plague decimates their city. I think this is after a book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/014044629X/002-2855834-2432058?v=glance&n=283155&v=glance
Official Site: None yet
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0437954/
Trailer Link: None yet
Costume Comments: Heh, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say absolutely not accurate, but pretty. If you surf the pictures links on IMDB you can find a huge picture of Hayden picking his nose.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age

Date Released: Unknown 2006 Wide/Limited
Starring: Cate Blanchett, Clive Owen, Geoffrey Rush
Synopsis: An exploration of the relationship between Elizabeth I (Blanchett) and the adventurer Sir Walter Raleigh (Owen).
Official Site: None
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414055/
Trailer Link: None
Costume Comments: First one was gorgeous, this one must be too. I have declared it!

Copying Beethoven

Date Released: Unknown 2006 Limited
Starring: Joe Anderson, Ed Harris, Diane Kruger
Synopsis: A fictionalized account of the last year of Beethoven's life.
Official Site: None
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0424908/
Trailer Link: None
Costume Comments: No pictures yet of Diane, so it's hard to tell if there will be opulent dresses or if it will be full of men's frocks.

Goya's Ghosts

Date Released: Unknown 2006 Wide/Limited
Starring: Stellan Skarsgård, Craig Stevenson, Natalie Portman, Randy Quaid
Synopsis: Painter Francisco Goya faces a scandal involving his muse, who is labeled a heretic by a monk.
Official Site: None
IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455957/
Trailer Link: None
Costume Comments: I've got mixed feelings on this wierd gold thing, which is one of two costumes we have (the other is a plague-outfit that isn't very flattering).

How did movies go from 'nothing worth watching' to "OMG, there's not enough time for them all!' in just a few short months, anyway?

I hadn't either until I did an IMDB surf for obscure up-and-comings. It looks really good though, the actress looks like she has Bettie down pretty well.

Yeah, I know of a few sites that have info on tying obis.

Thank god! I am not the only one who has noticed Kristen Dunst's weird boob problem. It's like she never wears a bra in anything and her boobs are set in the middle of her torso!

It's like a train wreck...I can't stop looking!!! :)

From: [identity profile] auroraceleste.livejournal.com
I KNOW!!!

It's just wierd. Her boobs are set around her waist, below her elbows. Not just that, but she never wears a bra, and they're saggy, yet she never does anything to try and enhance something else to take away from them. You gotta wonder who her stylist is. That must be why I liked her a lot better in Mona Lisa Smile than in Spiderman, because she was forced into period underwear.

Regarding the Obi - I have no idea where you live, but there is a Japanese Kimono shop in Soho (Manhattan). Absolutely beautiful stuff if you're ever there. Maybe there's a shop in a city near you? Also check out your local library - there's probably books on Kimonos. A good picture could probably help a lot.

The hair and makeup for Memoirs are COMPLETELY wrong. It really steams me; apparently traditional maiko hair and makeup were deemed too 'weird' for Westerners according to the filmmakers. :P

Other than that though, damn you! I already have 5 million costumes on my to-do list...*sigh*

I was considering seeing the film, never read the book, but knowing now that the costuming is inaccurate, I might not bother as that was the only thing I was looking forward to.

It's true that the costumes are a little stylized, but they are still georgous!!! And the plot is worth watching for too.

The only things that are really off are the hair(it's too flat, it needs to be stiff and round) and the necklines are dramaticly plunging down the back--but this is the way the geisha wore them, it is breathtaking to see these kimono. To let you know, women tend to wear them closer to the back of the neck so most pictures you will see of kimono will show this instead. And last, they didn't wear fur, but one of the main characters is flamboyant and is shown to wear fur robes early on in the movie....

I'm a big fan of geikos/maikos and wouldn't want to watch a film that inaccurately portrays them. I haven't seen or heard much about the film either that makes me want to see it.

The book isn't quite true either then and you'll be dissappointed. However, if you would like, read Geisha of Gion: The Memoir of Mineko Iwasaki by Mineko Iwasaki. It is a true story, and she helped the writer of the Memoirs of a geisha.

ok, you don't know me and this is a very belatd comment in relation to your date of posting, but i was reviewing back entries from the 'costuming' community and came across this. a few things i can't keep myself from saying:

a. good lord yes, the decameron is based on a book. it was written around the earlier outbreaks of the black plague, let's say late 1300s early 1400s, by giovanni boccaccio, and as a secular work of fiction it is considered a literary breakthrough for medieval europe, transitioning the highly religious late gothic era into the humanist renaissance.

b. i am so incredibly excited for the sequel to elizabeth, thank you thank you for bringing it to my attention.

c. bettie page was a much fuller woman, and far more attractive for it, than the woman in the picture posted for the film 'the notorious bettie page'. it's a shame film producers don't think popular america would enjoy the gorgeous full-figure of bettie page onscreen, and so they substitute somebody so petite.

Date: 2005-12-28 01:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] auroraceleste.livejournal.com
a. eh, you can't expect me to know everything, and I'll err on the not-knowing side rather than saying something I'm not sure about.

b. Welcome! If you're looking for more updates comments on this post led me to create [livejournal.com profile] costume_movies for updates just like this.

c. Totally agree, and yet, imo it's something that they actually acknowledged her existance.

I saw Narnia, loved it, I watched it over and over, I really liked it, though i think the white witches costume was a little overdone, as was a bit of her acting, but the children were surprisingly good, good movie um... 8/10

I saw Memoirs of a Geisha too. Really good, dont think I would go out of my way to see it again, though if it came out on DVD I might buy it. 7/10

I really like the first Underworld, but I have not sought to watch evolution...

Hvaent watched any of the others, i have only really seen adverts for Tristan and Isoldere and for Casanova, will def see Pirates of the Carribean though WOOTY!
